The Gamibino Family is one of the most recognized names in the underworld today. They have been a force to be reckoned with since there early days in Brooklyn in the early 20th century. Some of the most famous names in Mafia lore have been members of the Gambino Family, including Albert Anastasia, Vincent Mangano, and John Gotti.
The Gambino Family actually took the name "Gambino" from Carlo Gambino, who took over the family in 1957 and was in charge until his death in 1976. He is considered the best and most profitable boss in the families' history, thus the reason for the adoption of his name to the family. Carlo was also remarkable in the fact that he never served any jailtime. That's remarkable for anyone in the Mafia, but especially a Don.
Lately, leadership in the Gambino family has been a little unstable. John Gotti was the boss for a long time, from '85-'92. In 1992, Gotti was convicted for murder conspiracy and racketeering. As of right now, his son is in control, but this is not the top choice of The Commission. Right now though, he runs the family on the basis that no better choice is available right now.
