The University of Montevallo Community Garden was first thought up in 2008 by the university's Environmental Club. In 2009, Mrs. Holly Wadleigh started school at UM and it was at this time that she started to volunteer and wrote the Green Fund grant for the UM Community Garden to be started.
There were 2 main goals when the UM Garden was started. The first of these 2 main goals was to educate those that are interested in gardening and an organic lifestyle. The second of these goals is to grow food to be donated to the Shelby Emergency Assistance foundation.
In addition to these 2 main goals, the UM Garden has another future goal that directly affects the University of Montevallo. This last goal is to grow enough food to donate to the SEA and have enough left over to supply the University Cafateria with fresh produce grown locally and organically.
