History of the Azalea Trail Maids

Older Pictures of Trail Maids

The Mobile Azalea Trail Maids take their name from the famous Azalea Trail in Mobile, Alabama. In the 1920s, the Mobile Junior Chamber of Commerce planted azaleas down a single street in an effort to beautify the city. Each year, the Azalea Trail would have an opening ceremony featuring local debutantes. In the late 1940s, the first official Azalea Trail Court was established. By the late 1950s, the event had gained so much noteriety that young women from across the nation sought to participate. Due to increased popularity, the Mobile Azalea Trail Maid Court was limited to include only 50 Mobile County high school senior women. In an effort to involve young women outside of the Mobile area, a nationwide scholarship program was founded named America's Junior Miss. Today, America's Junior Miss and the Mobile Azalea Trail Maids exist to provide scholarship opportunities to deserving young women.
