Types of Chihuahuas
Body Type:
Chihuahuas come in Apple Head and Deer Head as well as long-haired and short-haired. Obviously, at times these different types mix which create a breed commonly referred to as a "Dapple Head" Chihuahua which can have mixed features from both the Deer and Apple Heads.
Apple Head
The Apple Head generally has a round head and short nose, causing the head to be shaped much like an apple. This type is more likely to have the bugged-out eyes that the term "Chihuahua" brings to mind.
Deer Head
Deer Head Chihuahuas have much longer noses and are less likely to have the bugged-out eyes. The faces of this type look much like a Doberman Pinscher.
Short-haired
The most common Chihuahuas are short-haired. These dogs are easy to keep clean and are not bad about shedding.
Long-haired
Long-haired Chihuahuas are only slightly harder to keep clean. They have to be brushed rather often in order to keep their coats shiny and soft.
Size
Chihuahuas are all very small. Breeders, however, have decided that they are not small enough and continue to breed them smaller. If someone sells you a "toy" or "teacup" Chihuahua, it simply means that the dog has been bred to be smaller than normal.
